Women’s Day celebration in Kolkata
Sumoyee Mukherjee, founder of blog Lafashionistaa, organized a meet of eight panelists on the occasion of Women’s Day celebration in Kolkata where women who had been overcoming societal barriers for decades and are still in their self-reliant struggle against injustice, taboos, inequalities and hardship narrated their tales.
So, how did Sumoyee get the idea to organize the meet? “Fashion has always meant a complement to one’s personality and in an extended sense, an expression of all that stands for. My journey and hence germination from my academics to the fashion world, to its fruition is through my deep passion that has motivated me to start my blog Lafashionistaa and work with some of the eminent designers in the field. Gradually I molded my fashion blog Lafashionistaa’ to enable me to work on a very novel aspect. This has helped me to bring together the 8 panelists,” said Sumoyee.
Titled The Unstopabbles’21 in association with BMW, the event was held at the BMW, OSL Prestige, Kolkata, on Women’s Day.
Women Day celebration, tales of brave women
As part of the Women’s Day celebration, Sumoyee introduced the gathering to Debasmita, who have been shammed for years because of being bloated.
However, being a plus-size confident girl, Debasmita she did not care what the society has to say about her body shape. She believes in “beauty lies within” and it’s very important to have self-confidence and self- belief.
Sumoyee also introduced the crowd to Rupa, who having disagreed to a marriage proposal, have been cursed and burnt with acid on her face. But still she believed that to live a happy and blissful life, it was always important to have self faith of overcoming all societal struggles. This has helped her to grow and become an example for others.
Inspirational stories of women
The story of Sirena inspired many. She was trafficked at the age of 11 across Bangladesh and has been serving the Sonagachi and Khidirpur redlight area for 21 years.
But still she had the faith and courage of keeping her next generation away from her sufferings, and hence she educated her only son at The Newlight’s Khelaghar.
Then, there were Rina and Khadija at the event. Both are serving the society by selling vegetables, meeting the days’ need and serving houses as a help, despite tolerating domestic violence and social injustice.
Dona became a mother at a tender age and left by husband and by the society, still germinated to an established self-employed woman fighting against all the odds. She is giving her only daughter the most comfort life she could.
Sohini is a victim of assault, proved to the society that it’s not the body but the soul that needs to be pure. And there was Aditri who has prioritized her dream of getting a transformation and hence fulfilling her wishes of becoming a super model, without listening to the unjustified views of the society.
Sumoyee also thanked Dr Anutamma Banerjee, Dr Puspita Mukherjee, Malavika Sanyal, Alokananda Ray and Dr Urmi Basu for helping her in the initiative.
