Kolkata, May 4, 2021: When the TMC celeb candidates shine bright in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the same cannot be said about their BJP counterparts.
Mamata Banerjee’s party TMC has been voted to power in Bengal with 213 seats and BJP winning 77 seats. Meanwhile, the Left alliance with Congress and Indian Secular Front (ISF) managed only one seat. However, Left and Congress returned empty-handed.
TMC celeb candidates shine bright
At a time when TMC celeb candidate shine bright, the BJP stars had to go empty-handed. Nominating celeb candidates is nothing new in TMC. But this was a first for the BJP in the state. Even for the CPI (M). The Left had nominated Bengali actor Devdutt Ghosh in Tollygunge against TMC’s Arup Biswas and BJP’s Babul Supriyo. However, it was Biswas, who won the battle and that, too, by a huge margin.
The winning celeb candidates of TMC are Raj Chakraborty from Barrackpore, June Malia from Mednipur, Soham Chakraborty from Chandipur, Kanchan Mullick from Uttarpara, Aditi Munshi from Rajarhat-Gopalpur and Lovely Maitra from Sonarpur Dakshin.
Among them, Bengali TV actress Lovely was pitted against another senior TV actress and BJP leader Anjana Basu. But it was Lovely, who returned home with the winning prize.
Soham dedicates his win to Mamata Banerjee. “I am thankful to the people of Chandipur and my party chief Mamata Banerjee for entrusting me with the responsibility,” he said.
Kanchan, who took on TMC turncoat leader Prabir Kumar Ghosal in Uttarpara, wants to become a people’s person. “I am thankful that so long people have loved me as an actor. Now, I want to become a people’s person too,” he said.
TMC celeb candidates shine bright, BJP stars fare poorly
While most TMC celeb candidates shine bright, among BJP it is only fashion designer Agnimitra Paul from Asansol Dakshin who bagged the winning certificate.
Only three of the Bengali celebrity candidates who were fielded by Mamata Banerjee have lost to BJP. They are Koushani Mukherjee (Krishnanagar Uttar), Saayoni Ghosh (Asansol Dakshin), and Sayantika Banerjee (Bankura).
Meanwhile, BJP had huge hopes from the BJP stars. Actor and BJP leader Rudranil Ghosh was pitted against veteran TMC leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay in Bhowanipore. Actor Srabanti battled it out with education minister Partha Chatterjee in Behala Paschim, actor Parno Mittra took on TMC state minister Tapas Ray at Baranagar and Actor and BJP leader Yash Dasgupta lost to TMC’s Swati Khandakar in Chanditala. BJP’s candidate from Behala Purba Paayal Sarkar tried hard but returned home empty-handed against TMC’s Ratna Chatterjee. BJP leader and Bengali actor Tanushree also lost in Shyampur.
Tathagata Roy takes a dig at actors fielded by BJP
Veteran BJP leader Tathagata Roy took a dig at some actor-turned-BJP candidates. According to him, they never had anything to do with politics but were fielded by the party only to concede electoral defeat in the Bengal assembly poll.
“Film and TV actors who never had anything to do with politics, let alone BJP, were handed tickets by BJPs election management team. Parno Mitra (Baranagar), Srabanti Chatterjee (Behala West), Payel Sarkar (Behala East). These women were so politically stupid that they had gone on a steamer trip with TMCs playboy-politician Madan Mitra less than a month before elections and shot selfies with him. All were roundly defeated,” he wrote.
