The uncertain road ahead for Congress in Rajasthan

On 12th July 2020, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, finally burst open the hidden differences between him and the Deputy Chief Minister, Sachin Pilot. Sources predict that Sachin Pilot is colluding with 30 other Congress MLAs of Rajasthan to topple the ruling government. Will he go with the BJP?

The brewing tension between the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan came to limelight on 12th July 2020. It has been long predicted that Sachin Pilot, the Deputy Chief Minister, and Ashok Gehlot, the Chief Minister, were struggling within the Congress Party concerning assuming power.

Ruling government may topple

As claimed by Mr Pilot, the ruling government is a minority in the state of Rajasthan; and that around 30 MLAs are in support of him. This is a clear indication that Mr Pilot’s predicting the ruling government to topple down. Ashok Gehlot came before the media to claim that huge amounts of cash were offered to his party members, which is a clear indication of rivalries to break his party’s support. Still, he went ahead to affirm that he has the support of 109 MLAs in the 200-member parliament.

As the political crisis is deepening in the state of Rajasthan, the IT department has been on alert. It conducted raids in the houses of Dharmendra Rathod and Rajiv Arora, who are considered to be two of the closest allies of Ashok Gehlot. The raid took place immediately after Gehlot had called for a party meeting with his members on Saturday 11th July 2020. Surprisingly, the police weren’t informed about the raid that took place.

Meeting between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot

The meeting that took place with the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot was observed absent from the meeting. His absence was very much predictable as he had already sent a letter claiming that he would not be able to make it to the meeting. It has also been reported that Sachin Pilot was observed in Delhi on Saturday, where he has been reported to be camping with 20-25 of MLAs at a hotel in Gurugram.

A report has corroborated indications that the summons issued to Pilot by the police’s special operations group (SOG) acted as the last straw in the ongoing rift between the two top leaders in the western state. Allies of Mr Pilot have maintained that the SOG’s letter to the Deputy CM to join the probe into attempts to topple the Gehlot government was a humiliation to him. On 10th July, the SOG had sent a letter to Pilot seeking his availability for recording his statement in connection with the alleged attempts to topple Congress government in the state.

What will be the result?

Although the outcome of this feud is unknown, certain possible outcomes might result from Mr Pilot’s actions. The first possible prediction is that the Gehlot government might fall by losing the majority in the state legislature. The second outcome could be that the government stays, but Gehlot is thrown out of power. Sachin Pilot has an option to ‘honourably quit’ the party; he could also take a slightly different approach where he quits his position from the government but stays in the party.

In this way, there is a high chance of him getting marginalised within his party by his party members. Many are predicting that this political feud ongoing in Rajasthan might result in what happened with the government in Madhya Pradesh, where Scindia, although claimed initially that he isn’t going to join the BJP; ended up allying with them at the end.

The road ahead for the Gehlot government is unpredictable because it is unclear if any outside forces are trying to topple the government, or it is Mr Pilot’s thirst for power. The investigation is ongoing as to the findings of this currents crisis, but with the progress of time, it will become more evident as to what course of action will the current government take to stabilize its ruling in the state of Rajasthan.
