Padma Awards 2021: The list of awardees and more

The list of Padma Awards 2021 is out and the award ceremony is to be held around March or April this year. Seven persons including Shinzo Abe and Balasubramaniam, have been honored with Padma Vibhushan. Ten people have been listed down for Padma Bhushan, while 102 others have been selected for Padma Shri.

The list of the Padma Awards 2021 has been announced at the Rajpath celebrations of Republic Day. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and late legendary singer S P Balasubramaniam are among the list of 119 personalities who will be conferred the Padma Awards by President Ram Nath Kovind this year.

Seven personalities, which include Abe and Balasubramaniam, have been honored with Padma Vibhushan. Ten people have been listed down for Padma Bhushan, while 102 others have been selected for Padma Shri Award.

Padma Awards 2021: What are Padma Awards?

Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian awards of the country – are conferred in three categories, i.e., Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The awards are given in various disciplines, fields of activities, viz. art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, and a few more.

Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order; and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

Padma Vibhushan Awardees

The list of Padma Vibhushan awardee includes former Japan PM Shinzo Abe, late singer S P Balasubramaniam (posthumous), Karnataka’s Dr. Belle Monappa Hegde (medicine), late Narinder Singh Kapany (science and engineering), Maulana Wahiduddin Khan (spiritualism), B. B. Lal (archaeology) and Sudarshan Sahoo (art).

Padma Bhushan Awardees

Late LJP founder Ram Vilas Paswan (posthumous), ex-Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel, former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi (posthumous) and retired bureaucrat Nripendra Misra were among the list of Padma Bhushan awardees.

As per the list released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 29 out of 119 awardees are women, 10 from the category of foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, one transgender, and 16 posthumous awardees.

The Padma awards will be conferred to the listed people by President Ram Nath Kovind at ceremonial functions at Rashtrapati Bhawan in around March-April this year.

Padma Bhushan: M. Mumtaz Ali, Syed Muazzem Ali (posthumous), Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Ajoy Chakravorty, Manoj Das, Balkrishna Dosh, Krishnammal Jagannathan, S.C. Jamir, Anil Prakash Joshi, Dr. Tsering Landol, Anand Mahindra, Neelakanta Ramakrishna, Madhava Menon (posthumous), Manohar Gopal Krishna, Prabhu Parrikar(posthumous), Prof. Jagdish Sheth, P.V. Sindhu, Venu Srinivasan.
