India prepares for harsher winter in 2020

Low Base Temperatures Across the States in India

The IMD says temperatures remained ‘considerably beneath ordinary’ (- 3.1°C to – 5.0°C) at places over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad and ‘underneath typical’ (- 1.6°C to – 3.0°C) over West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi in the previous 24 hours with Hissar recording the base temperature of 8.9 degrees Celsius.

Reason for Extended Winters 

As per Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather, November 1 was the coldest in the previous 10 years in the capital and comparative conditions are likewise predominant in abutting districts. 

Foreseeing a harsher and broadened winter this season, he says there are three primary explanations behind an early drop in temperatures this year — dry climate, lesser/more fragile western disturbances, and clear skies.

Around Diwali, a solid western disturbance is expected to bring snow to slopes, which will bring about a drop in temperatures. Likewise, this is a La Nina year and La Nina conditions coincide with extended winter.”

Harsher winter: La Nina 

La Nina is an atmospheric design that portrays the cooling of the Pacific waters, while El Nino is described by curiously warm sea temperatures.
