Google News showcase adds four more Indian languages, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu & Marathi

Google News showcase adds four more Indian languages, and said it is collaborating with a handful of News Showcase partners to make chosen paywalled content available to users for free. Over the next three years, Google says it will invest $1 billion on news partnerships and Google News Showcase, which will help newspapers develop, disseminate, and explain vital information to people in new ways.

Google News showcase adds four more Indian languages as announced on Thursday, September 9. The four other languages are – Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu – in addition to English and Hindi.

“We announced in May that Google News Showcase, our online experience and licencing programme for news organisations and readers, would be expanding to India. We now have more than 50 partners representing more than 70 publications, thanks to the launch of these new languages and new partners today,” in a statement, the search engine powerhouse stated.

Google News showcase adds 4 more Indian languages, customers to have free access to paywalled items

The company said it is collaborating with a handful of News Showcase partners to give customers free access to paywalled items.

This feature allows users to learn about material that they might not otherwise have access to. Google said its $1 billion investment in news partnerships and Google News Showcase over the next three years will help publications generate, distribute, and explain critical information to people in new ways.

“Publishers can use News Showcase panels to tell key news articles with context and links to further pieces. Users may readily find and identify credible news organisations because of the panels’ distinctive branding,” News recently quoted Brad Bender, VP Product Management.

Launch of News Showcase in India

In May, Google announced the launch of News Showcase in India, which includes national, regional, and local news outlets such as Indo Asian News Service (IANS), ABP LIVE, India TV, Zee News, Amar Ujala, Deccan Herald, Punjab Kesari, The Tribune, Kalinga TV, and others.

“The goal is to help news outlets and publications curate high-quality content for Google’s News and Discover platforms in the country, connecting people with the news they need, especially during these difficult COVID-19 times,” Google stated in a statement.
