Entire country will witness khela in near future: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that the entire country will witness khela in near future and added that those who participate in matches organised on the occasion of the “Khela Hobe” Divas would be awarded an additional Rs 15,000 after her administration gave financial help of Rs 5 lakh apiece to at least 25,000 clubs in the state.

August 3, 2021: Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, said on Monday that the TMC’s election slogan “khela hobe” (there will be a game), has become extremely popular with the public, and that the entire country will witness khela that will be played in the days ahead, supposedly referring to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Bengal will take delight in teaching India the way, according to the TMC chief.

“Whether you agree or disagree with the slogan, it is undeniable that it has gained a lot of traction throughout the country. The slogan was raised in Parliament and in several states, including UP and Rajasthan,” she said after launching the “Khela Hobe” scheme, which will distribute footballs to sports clubs.

Mamata went on to say that so far, only a little game has been played, but that more is on the way. “Bengal can be proud of leading the way in this match. Remember that in the not-too-distant future, the entire country will be treated to a sporting event. There is no such thing as life without khela (game)” she insisted.

Electioneering by Mamata Banerjee

During electioneering for the assembly elections earlier this year, the fiery TMC chief said she heard people screaming the phrase everywhere she went.

The Mamata Banerjee government has planned to mourn the death of 16 football fans who died in a stampede during a Derby match in the city in 1980 by holding a ‘Khela Hobe Divas’ on August 16, named after the iconic phrase.

She added approximately one lakh more footballs will be distributed to players and coaches in rural regions after distributing ten footballs each to 303 clubs registered with the Indian Football Association (IFA).

Banerjee said individuals participating in matches organised on the occasion of the “Khela Hobe” Divas will be awarded an additional Rs 15,000 after her administration gave financial help of Rs 5 lakh apiece to at least 25,000 clubs in the state.
