Kolkata, April 8, 2021: After the Election Commission issues notice to Mamata Banerjee for “openly demanding votes on communal grounds”, the Bengal chief minister asked how many complaints have been filed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Election Commission issues notice to Mamata Banerjee
The Election Commission issues notice to Mamata Banerjee for allegedly violating the model code and appealing Muslims to unite and vote for TMC.
The Election Commission asked the CM to give a reply within 48 hours to explain her remarks, which they say has violated the provisions of the Representation of the People Act and the model code. This is in reference to an election meeting of Mamata in Bengal’s Tarkeshwar on April 3 ahead of the third phase of polls in the state.
The notice is based on a complaint by a BJP delegation led by Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. Alongside him, BJP national secretary Sunil Deodhar and senior leader GVL Narasimha Rao and others met the poll panel and submitted a memorandum.
Addressing a rally in Tarkeshwar, Mamata had urged Muslims to not listen to AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi and Indian Secular Front’s (ISF) Abbas Siddiqui and let their votes split. Mamata also said that the minority will be in danger in BJP is voted to power in Bengal.
Election Commission issues notice to Mamata, Mahua Moitra launches attack on poll body
After the Election Commission issues notice to Mamata, TMC MP Mahua Moitra attacked the poll body on Twitter.
She said that the Trinamool Cogress had submitted video evidence of BJP candidate distributing cash. She also alleged that BJP had distributed cash coupons to people to attend its meeting and vote for it. Then, she takes a jibe at Election Commission and wrote, “Gentlemen, at least keep up the farce of impartiality.”

Mamata hits back
On Thursday at a meeting in Domjur in Bengal, Mamata took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also questioned the poll body and said, “How many complaints filed against Narendra Modi for doing Hindu-Muslim every day?”
“It hardly matters even if ten show cause notices are issued against me. I am telling everyone to vote unitedly. There will be no division. How many complaints have been filed against Narendra Modi. He does Hindu-Muslim every day,” Mamata said.
On Tuesday, PM Modi during his campaigning in Cooch Behar, took a jibe at Mamata and said, “Didi recently you said all Muslims should unite and not allow their votes to be divided… means you are convinced the Muslim vote bank has also gone out of your hands, the Muslims have also turned away from you. Had we said the same thing that all Hindus should unite, everybody would have criticised us. The EC would have sent us notices.”
