New Tehri (Uttarakhand), May 11, 2021 (Agencies): Several shops, houses and the building of an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Devprayag market in the upper reaches of Tehri Garhwal district were washed away as a Cloudburst hits Devprayag on Tuesday evening. There have been no deaths.
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been rushed to the spot for the relief and rescue operation, Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kumar said.
Cloudburst hits Devprayag
The cloudburst hit Devprayag in Tehri district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday, razing two municipal buildings to the ground and damaging several shops.
However, there was no loss of life as people were alert and had moved to safe locations like the bus stand and police station premises, or damaged pedestrian bridges, water pipelines and electricity supply lines, an official said.
The cloudburst occurred over the Shanta river, causing inundation of areas along its banks with a huge amount of slush containing boulders, SHO of the Devprayag police station Mahipal Singh Rawat said.
Two municipality buildings, including the multi-purpose Nagar Palika Bhawan, caved in after being hit by the rubble brought down by the cloudburst, he added.
A number of shops in the Dashrath Danda Parvat area of Devprayag were also damaged in the cloudburst, the SHO said.
Damage yet to be ascertained after cloudburst hits Devprayag
Municipal Commissioner K.K. Kotiyal said the extent of damage is yet to be assessed.
“No casualties have been reported yet. SDRF teams are on their way to the spot,” Uttarakhand police chief Ashok Kumar said.
Home minister Amit Shah has spoken to Uttarakhand chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat after the cloudburst.
The cloudburst occurred at around 5 pm, damaging nearly a dozen shops and other properties, officials said.
No casualties were reported as most of the establishments were shut owing to Covid-19 restrictions.
