Old bridge collapsed over river on Kuchinda-Sambalpur Highway

Jhulen bridge collapsed over river causing severe damage. A truck driver was injured as the vehicle fell into the river after the old bridge succumbed to ageing.

September 11, 2021: After the repeated bridge collapse incidents in Uttarakhand due to flash floods, Odisha saw a similar calamity on Thursday night. An old bridge collapsed over a river and was part of an NH. The 100-year-old iron bridge succumbed to ageing and collapsed, injuring a truck driver severely.

Jhulen Bridge collapsed over river injuring a truck driver

The Jhulen Bridge on National Highway 49 which connects Kuchinda to Sambalpur and Deogarh over Kharla river in Sambalpur district collapsed on Thursday night injuring a dumper truck driver.

Reportedly, the truck was crossing the bridge when the platform collapsed and the vehicle fell into the river.

The dumper driver has been rescued by firefighters from imminent danger after hours of trying.

Bridge collapsed over river: Firefighters rescue truck driver

After hearing of the incident, Kuchinda police and firefighters rushed to the location and initiated the rescue operation. Initially, the driver of the vehicle could not be traced immediately as his legs were pressed in the severely damaged vehicle.

However, after several hours of rescue operation, the results were fruitful and the driver was rescued.

Meanwhile, the firefighter Paulesh Kujjur said that the driver was in a serious condition and he could not be rescued immediately despite their best efforts as his legs were stuck in the damaged vehicle. He also added that they used gas cutters to remove the damaged parts of the vehicle and rescued him safely. He has been admitted to Kuchinda Sub Divisional Hospital.

Movement along the NH 49 is at standstill

The vehicular movement along the NH has come to a standstill after the Jhulen bridge collapse.

Sambalpur District Collector Shubham Saxena and Superintendent of Police B Gangadhar visited the spot for inspection after the incident.

Bridge collapses are becoming a common news in the country. While some are happening due to natural calamities, others are due to sheer negligence and lack of maintenance.

Either way, the lives of people are at risk.
