Raat Akeli Hai – Netflix

What happens when two powerhouse performers — Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte — come together in a crime noir?

You get loads of action, superior acting and a thriller which keeps the audience guessing till the last scene. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a cop in this dark universe set in a village in Uttar Pradesh.

After the head of the family is murdered on the night of his second wedding, each one is a suspect and it is up to the police to find out the culprits. If you haven’t watched it till now, don’t waste any further weekend.

Trapped –Amazon Prime Video

Rajkummar Rao stars in this exceptionally claustrophobic expedition — Trapped — where director Vikramaditya Motwane seizes the feeling flawlessly. As an audience, at times you feel nauseated and at times helpless. And that is where the director wins.

The story of Shaurya (read Rajkummar) unintentionally traps himself in his new apartment which has no water, food or any neighbours, and must find out some ways in order to stay alive.

There are many close shaves where Shaurya is just about to get someone’s attention to help him get out. The movie will make you stay on the edge of your seat. We know how good an actor Rajkumar is, but watch this film because it will make you uncomfortable at times.

Mom – Netflix

Mom (2018) marked Sridevi’s come back on the big screen after five years of doing English Vinglish (2013). The movie, which is set in Delhi, has Sridevi playing a gentle mother to a teenager, who is raped and murdered subsequently at a party.

As the police aren’t predominantly supportive in the condition, Sridevi determines to take matters into her own hands with help from a local and smart detective, played by Nawazuddin Siddique.

The film is overloaded with thrill, suspense, drama and a fascinating climax. In English Vinglish, you saw a much-lighter side of Sridevi but in Mom, she plays a much more serious character.

Malang- Netflix

If you’re a fan of rearguard action and ripped physiques with a thrilling plotline, Malang will be the ultimate ride for you.

The plot revolves around Advait (Aditya Roy Kapoor) who meets Sara (Disha Patani) in Goa and the two fall in love. Soon, life takes an unpredicted turn and Advait now is on a killing fling with two cops after him. Watch this most recent addition to Netflix’s Bollywood dossier to find out what happened.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy- Amazon Prime Video

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (2015) picks up speed right from the get go. The Bengali dhoti-clad sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi has just graduated from his college and he has a case on his hands already.

He undertakes to inspect the disappearance of Bhuvan, a chemist in Calcutta. Aided by Bhuvan’s son Ajit, Byomkesh ties up the case as it augments into a much bigger plot.

Now, when the director is Dibakar Banerjee, you can expect more than just a detective tale. The movie is a classic whodunit noir, with plausible performances by Sushant Singh Rajput and Anand Tiwari. The movie has a really volatile climax and the build up to it will keep you hooked onto the seats.

Article 15 – Netflix

Director Anubhav Sinha has hit us hard with his film Article 15, which takes a look at the caste-system in India against the backdrop of a thriller.

The film adopted its title from Article 15 of the Indian Constitution, which prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. The movie features Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead character, alongside Isha Talwar, Sayani Gupta, Kumud Mishra and Manoj Pahwa adding able support. It is enthused by the Badaun (Uttar Pradesh) rape case that made national headlines in 2014.

The plot discloses Khurrana’s riveting journey as a cop, who’s dependent on Article 15 to assist seek for justice for the death of two Dalit girls, who were viciously raped and murdered by men from a superior class. This will not be an easy watch but this film is one of the must-watch bollywood thrillers on OTT.

Laal Kaptaan –Amazon Prime Video

When Saif Ali Khan plays the antagonist, can it get any better? Remember Sriram Raghavan’s 2004 neo-noir thriller Ek Hasina Thi or his recent act as Udaybhan Singh Rathore in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.

Now, don’t miss him as the fierce and pitiless, blood-thirsty Naga sadhu in 2019 Laal Kaptan. He sets out on a killing spree and won’t stop until he ends the life of everyone who did him wrong in the past.

What is his true personality? What sort of incident took place in the past that he’s seeking revenge for? All of this is exposed in the deep climax of the movie that also features Manav Vij, Zoya Hussain, Deepak Dobriyal and Neeraj Kabi. Whilst the film, directed by Navdeep Singh, opened to mixed reviews, Saif’s avatar and his action sequences were highly praised.
