Health benefits of drinking green tea

Green tea serves more than just a hydrating agent. The plant from which green tea is obtained has a large number of healthy compounds that make it full of nutrients and healthy.

Green tea is considered to be one of the healthiest and most nutritious beverages we can consume. Owing to its antioxidant and other healthy features it is consumed to avail of the many health benefits it has to offer.

Here is a list of some of the health benefits one can have by consuming green tea.

Green Tea is rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols are said to be natural compounds that have health benefits, such as reducing inflammation and helping to fight cancer in the body. Green tea also contains a catechin called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). EGCG is considered to be one of the most powerful compunds that can help our body fight gainst diseases. Catechins are claimed to be natural antioxidants and can thus aid prevention of cell damage and provide other health benefits as that of an antioxidant. Owing to their antioxidant property, these substances can help to reduce the formation of free radicals in the body that can cause and aggravate the process of aging and related ailments, thus protecting new and young cells and molecules from damage.

Green tea also constitutes small amounts of minerals that can help maintain your health.

One should always try to choose and consume a higher quality brand of green tea, because some of the lower quality brands can contain excessive amounts of fluoride which can be harmful for the body.

Green tea can help improve brain function

Consumption of green tea can help keep you alert and also boost brain function. The key active ingredient is caffeine, which is a known stimulant and thus plays a major role in stimulating your central nervous system. The amount of caffeine in green tea is not as much as that in coffee, but enough to stimulate your body and increase attention and to boost power. Caffeine affects the brain by blocking an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine. This leads to increased activity of the neurons and the concentration of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine, thus giving you the stimulating effect. According to studies caffeine can improve various brain functions, including mood, vigilance, reaction time, and memory.

In addition to caffeine, green tea also contains another brain-boosting compound known as amino acid L-theanine. L-theanine  is claimed to cross the blood-brain barrier. It can help increase the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which has anti-anxiety effects. It also leads to an increase of dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain.

Studies claim that caffeine and L-theanine can have synergistic effects. This means that when combined together these two compounds can have particularly powerful effects in improving brain function and power. Because of the L-theanine and the small dose of caffeine, green tea gives you a much milder kind of buzz than coffee.

Green tea stimulates the process of fat burning

According to some studies, regular consumption of green tea can increase fat burning and boost metabolic rate. The constitute of green tea, caffeine, may also improve physical performance by moving fatty acids from fat tissue and making them available for utilization as a source of energy. According to claims and studies caffeine is considered to increase physical performance by approximately 11–12%.

Antioxidants in green tea may lower the risk of some cancers

Cancer is caused when there is uncontrolled growth of cells in our body. It’s also attributed as one of the world’s leading causes of death. According to researches, oxidative damage can lead to chronic inflammation, which can further lead to chronic diseases like cancers. Antioxidants can help protect against oxidative damage. Green tea is claimed to have an ample amount of powerful antioxidants.

According to a study, women who drank the most green tea had an approximately 20–30% lower risk of developing breast cancer, one of the most common cancers in women. Similarly for men drinking green tea had a lower risk of advanced prostate cancer. To get the most health benefits, one should avoid adding milk to your tea since it can reduce the antioxidant value in some teas.

Green tea may protect the brain from ageing

As mentioned earlier green tea can help boost your brain function. Additionally it can also prevent the aging of your brain thus preventing diseases related to aging of brain.

Like, Alzheimer’s disease which is a common neurodegenerative disease and the most common cause of dementia in older adults. Similarly, Parkinson’s disease is another common neurodegenerative disease and involves the death of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain.

According to several studies, the catechin compounds in green tea can help and protect neurons in test tubes and animal models, possibly lowering the risk of dementia.

With so many benefits to offer, regular and proper consumption of green tea can help make your body healthy and fit, while lowering the risk of diseases.
