10 High Sugar foods you should avoid

Sugary foods have never done good to anyone. Many people depend on quick, processed, easy to make foods for meals and snacks. Since these products often constitute high amounts of added sugar, that then makes up a large proportion of their daily calorie intake.

Intake of food rich in sugar has to lead to rates of obesity to rise worldwide. Sugar-sweetened drinks like sodas, juices, and sweet teas are loaded with fructose, a type of simple sugar. Consumption of fructose increases your hunger and desire for food more than that by glucose. Also, excessive consumption of fructose may result in resistance to leptin which is an important hormone for regulation of hunger. Additionally, consumption of a lot of sugar-sweetened beverages can result in an increased amount of visceral fat which is the deep belly fat mainly linked to conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Diets that are high in sugar diets have been linked with an increased risk of many diseases, specifically, those related to heart attributed to the number one cause of death worldwide. According to various studies foods high in sugar, diets can result in obesity, inflammation, and high triglyceride, blood sugar, and blood pressure levels, which all combine to increase the risk for heart diseases. Also, consuming a high amount of sugar, especially from sugar-sweetened drinks, has been linked to atherosclerosis, which is a disease characterized by fatty, artery-clogging deposits. According to some studies, one sugary drink a day can put you over the recommended daily limit for added sugar.

The set of foods high in refined carbs, including sugary foods and drinks, has been often associated with a higher risk of developing acne. Sugary foods quickly raise your blood sugar and insulin levels, which in turn causes increased androgen secretion, oil production, and inflammation, which all together result in acne development. According to studies, a  low-glycemic diet is linked to a reduced acne risk, while high-glycemic diets are linked to greater risk.

Increases Your Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes has been a pain in the neck for a pretty large portion of the population. The worldwide reporting of cases of diabetes has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Consuming foods high in sugar can easily lead to obesity, which is considered the strongest risk factor for diabetes. Additionally, prolonged and repetitive high-sugar consumption can cause resistance to insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels. resistance to insulin can cause blood sugar levels to rise and highly increases your risk of diabetes.

May Increase Your Risk of Cancer

Eating foods that contain high amounts of sugar can increase your risk of developing certain cancers. As mentioned before, a diet rich in sugary foods and beverages can lead to obesity, which significantly raises your risk of cancer. Also, diets high in sugar increase inflammation in your body and can result in insulin resistance, together which can increase cancer risk. After knowing the list let’s jump onto the major sources of high sugars we might be consuming daily unknowingly.

Major Source Of High Sugar Consumption

1. Low-Fat Yogurt

Yogurt is considered to a food very high in nutrition, but like many other low-fat products, low-fat yogurts have sugar added to them to enhance flavor.

2. BBQ Sauce

BBQ sauce is used to enhance your food’s taste a lot, but 2 tablespoons of it can contain around 14 grams of sugar.

3. Ketchup

Ketchup is a must need article with most of our snacks, but jusy like BBQ sauce, it has high amounts of sugar in it.

4. Fruit Juice

Despite the claims of them being of natural fruits with no added preservatives they contain very large doses of sugar and very little fiber.

5. Spaghetti Sauce

Spaghetti sauces, though not at all taste sweet but are very rich sources of sugars. They do contain some natural sugar owing to the fact that they’re made with tomatoes. But, many spaghetti sauces have extra added sugar in them.

6. Sports Drinks

Sports drinks can generally be considered to be a healthy choice for those who work out. But, these drinks are made to hydrate and boost up trained athletes during prolonged, intense periods of exercise. This leads to, them containing high amounts of added sugars so that it can be quickly absorbed and used for energy. Thus they can cause obesity and metabolic disease just like any other sugary drink.

7. Chocolate Milk

Milk that has been flavored with cocoa and sweetened with sugar is called chocolate milk. Milk has sugar of its own only. Added to these the extra sugar, increases the sugar content drastically leading to unhealthy drink.

8. Granola

Granola is generally considered as a low-fat health food, though it is high in both calories and sugar. The main ingredient in granola constitutes oats. Plain rolled oats are a nutritious cereal containing carbs, protein, fat, and fiber. But in granola, these oats are mixed with nuts and honey or other added sweeteners, which increases the amount of sugar and calories.

9. Flavored Coffees

Though a need for many, the large amount of sugars in flavoured coffees can be shocking.  Added to it syrups and other subsidiaries can further shoot up the sugar levels.

10. Iced Tea

Iced tea is a chilled tea, generally with added sugar or sugary syrup for better flavour. This increases the sugar levels in the beverage and can cause harm to your body
