The health benefits of apple cider vinegar

In a second fermentation step, the alcohol is converted into vinegar by acetic acid-forming bacteria, namely the Acetobacters.

Apple cider vinegar, commonly known as cider vinegar, is a kind of vinegar derived from fermented apple juice. It finds its main uses in salad dressings, marinades, vinaigrettes, food preservatives, and chutneys. Its process of formation starts by crushing apples, then squeezing out the juice and then adding bacteria and to the liquid to start the alcoholic fermentation process, which aims to converts the sugars to alcohol. In a second fermentation step, the alcohol is converted into vinegar by acetic acid-forming bacteria, namely the Acetobacters. Acetic acid and malic acid together give the vinegar its sour taste. Apple cider vinegar constitutes 94% water, along with 1% carbohydrates and no fat or protein.

Apple cider vinegar, offers the following advantages-

1. To Lower Blood Sugar

Apple cider vinegar is claimed to help in diabetes by controlling the blood sugar levels. Some studies have shown that consumption of vinegar post a high-carb meal can improve insulin sensitivity by as much as 34% and reduce blood sugar levels. However, if you’re on medication for diabetes, you should check with your doctor before taking apple cider vinegar.

2. To help check overeating

Apple cider vinegar is sometimes claimed to help in weight loss by helping you fully. For short term usage, it can reduce your appetite and calorie intake but its long term uses for weight loss are unknown.

3. To Preserve Food

Vinegar of all types helps preserve food. They make the medium acidic and thus inhibit the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms thus preventing spoilage.

4. As a Deodorizer

Apple cider vinegar owing to its antibacterial properties is often claimed to eliminate bad smells. Though this result isn’t backed up by any scientific research one can try it out by mixing apple cider vinegar with water to make a deodorizing spray, as a natural alternative to odor neutralizers. When apple cider vinegar with water and Epsom salt it can be used to make a foot soak which can help one get rid of unwanted foot odor by eliminating off odor-causing bacteria.

5. To Make a Salad dressings

Apple cider vinegar finds great use in making homemade easy healthy and tasty salad dressings.

6. To Lower the Risk of Cancer

It’s often claimed that apple cider vinegar can help lower your risk of cancer by killing cancer cells. Some observational studies also link the consumption of apple cider vinegar with a decreased risk of oesophageal cancer. However, there are studies that have linked it with an increased risk of bladder cancer.

7. Serves as an all-rounder cleaner

Apple cider vinegar owing to its anti-bacterial properties is considered a very good cleaner alternative for chemical-based cleaning materials. However, it should be remembered that spoonfuls of vinegar are capable of killing only certain bacteria and may be completely ineffective for other types of bacteria.

8. To Soothe a Sore Throat

Apple cider vinegar is claimed to be a home remedy for sore throats owing to its antibacterial properties that are supposed to help kill off the bacteria that could be causing the problem. However, there is no evidence to support its use in this way. Also, vinegar is very acidic and hence should always be taken after diluting it, else it has the potential of causing throat burns.

9. As a Facial Toner

Apple cider vinegar is claimed to help remedy skin conditions and reduce the signs of aging. For making the skin tonic mix 1 part apple cider vinegar to 2 parts water and then apply to the skin using a cotton pad. Dilution should be increased for sensitive skin

10. To Trap Fruit Flies

To shoo away pests like fruit fly add a few drops of apple cider vinegar and dish wash soap in a cup and mix it with water. With any fly sitting on it will sink in the mixture and die.

Although consumption of apple cider vinegar through an oral pathway in small quantities is considered safe ingestion of apple cider vinegar in tablet form poses a risk of injury to soft tissues of the mouth, throat, stomach, and kidneys. Due to its acidity, exposure of teeth from consuming undiluted apple cider vinegar may damage tooth enamel. With all these risks one should be very cautious while using the apple cider vinegar for any purposes.
