Adil Hussain wants actor from Northeast to play lead role in Mirabai Chanu’s biopic

Adil Hussain said unlike in the Mary Kom film, which had Priyanka Chopra in the lead, this time, he would hope an actor from Northeast to reprise the character of Mirabai Chanu in the biopic.

July 28, 2021: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has made the country proud with her Olympic silver medal in the 49kg category. And given Bollywood’s knack for biopics, it wouldn’t be long when a film will be announced on the Manipuri wrestling sensation. But actor Adil Hussain said unlike in the Mary Kom film, which had Priyanka Chopra in the lead, this time, he would hope an actor from Northeast to reprise the character of Chanu in the film.

Adil Hussain on casting of film on Mirabai Chanu

With Mirabai Chanu’s win at the Tokyo Olympics, India’s 21-year wait for a weightlifting medal also came to an end. Actor Adil Hussain in an interview with Hindustan Times said that if a film on Mirabai Chanu is made, he would prefer an actor from Northeast.

He said that in the past when a film on the life of world champion Mary Kom is made, Priyanka Chopra Jonas was cast and not an actor from Northeast.

“If someone makes a movie on Mirabai Chanu, I’m sure they’d be more imaginative and cast someone from the Northeast,” he said.

Adil Hussain prefers a Northeast actor for Mirabai Chanu film

Life of Pi actor Adil Hussain says that he isn’t judgmental about Priyanka Chopra Jonas and she is a very accomplished actor. But he would have definitely preferred someone from Northeast to have played the character of MC Mary Kom on the big screen in director Omung Kumar’s film.

“I’d have definitely preferred someone from Northeast. This isn’t at all a judgement on Priyanka, she’s a very accomplished artiste. First of all, Bollywood isn’t a family or mafia, it’s a stupid name actually given by some unimaginative people, it’s not original. I’m saying that the Hindi film industry lost an opportunity,” says the 57-year-old actor, who hails from Goalpara in Assam.

Northeast always neglected

Adil Hussain says that Northeast has been neglected both politically and economically.

“Northeast is always neglected by mainland India — politically and economically, we’re still to be assimilated and looked at as part of India by a lot of common people, who think that people especially from Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram are Chinese,” says the Pareeksha actor.
