Veteran Bollywood actor Shashikala dies at 88

Actor Shashikala was best known for her supporting roles in the 1960s-70s movies such as Gumrah, Chhote Sarkar and Aarti. With her long Bollywood career which has spanned over 60 years has witnessed more than a century of her films.

April 5, 2021: Counted as one of the best veteran actors of Bollywood who has starred in over hundred Bollywood movies, actor Shashikala dies at the age of 88 on Sunday. With her long Bollywood career which has spanned over sixty years has witnessed more than a century of her films.

Shashikala was best known for her supporting roles in the 1960s-70s movies such as Gumrah, Chhote Sarkar and Aarti.

Veteran actor Shashikala dies

Shashikala Jawalkar was born in Solapur and she started her acting career on stage at the mere age of five.

She then moved to Bombay with her family after her father went bankrupt and started searching for work in films. She married Om Prakash Saigal, in her early twenties. Om belonged to the K.L. Saigal’s family. They had two loving daughters. One of them passed away due to cancer.

Confirmation of the news

B.N. Tiwari, who is the president of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees, confirmed her demise by stating, “Shashikalaji has passed away. She was 88. We don’t know the exact details of her demise.”

Ashoke Pandit, who is the filmmaker and president of the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association also confirmed this news.

Condolence messages on the death of actor Shashikala

Shashikala’s sudden demise has set a flood of condolences to her family and loved ones on Twitter.

NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) chief, Sharad Pawar, stated in a tweet, “She made a significant mark on Indian film industry with her hard earned and well-deserved career. Condolences to her family and friends. RIP.”

Union minister Jitendra Singh tweeted, “Kyun Mujhe Itni Khushi’, which featured Shashikala and Deven Verma, from the film Anupama. “#Shashikala no more. She was among the last from that Golden Age genre of Bollywood. RIP.”

Naved Jafri, a Bollywood film producer was seen reminiscing Shashikala as ‘ a great artist ‘. He tweeted, “May the almighty give the family strength and patience to bear this irreplaceable loss. Deepest condolences #ShashiKala #RIPShashikala.”

Famous actor Farhan Akhtar took to Twitter and stated, “RIP Shashikala-ji. Condolences to the family.”

Legendary Bollywood singer, Lata Mangeshkar stated, “I am saddened after learning about the demise of the talented actor Shashikala. She played every kind of role with equal elan. May she rest in peace. My condolences to her family.”
