April 26, 2021 : At the 93rd Academy Awards, Chloe Zhao made history as the first woman of colour to win the Oscar for Best Director for Nomadland, which also won the award for Best Picture. After The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow, she’s also only the second woman in Oscar history to win the award.
Celebrities across the world joined in from two locations in Los Angeles for the 93rd Academy Awards, which was held virtually and in-person for the first time due to the pandemic.
It took place in Los Angeles, at both Union Station and the Dolby Theatre, two months later than originally planned, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on cinema. The nominations were announced on March 15, 2021.
Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor at the 93rd Academy Awards
Once again, there was no host for the ceremony. Nomadland won big at the Oscars as it won the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress awards. Anthony Hopkins won the Best Actor for The Father.
Now, it did surprise a lot of people, who were rooting for late Chadwick Boseman, who died last year of cancer and has swept awards season so far for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. David Fincher’s Mank, which led the way with 10 nominations, took home awards for cinematography and production design.
Best actress at the 93rd Academy Awards
Frances McDormand of Nomadland won her third Best Actress Oscar, thus matching Daniel Day-Lewis’ three Best Actor Oscars.

The film also won also Best Picture. Interestingly, the ceremony marked the first time since the 78th Academy Awards in 2006 that no film won more than three awards and the first time since the 44th Academy Awards that the ceremony did not end with Best Picture.
Oscar remembers Irrfan Khan, Bhanu Athaiya
At the Oscars 2021, special tribute was paid to actor Irrfan Khan and Academy Awards-winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, left for heavenly abode in 2020. In the segment titled, ‘In Memoriam’, a three-minute video, which featured the likes of Chadwick Boseman, Cicely Tyson, Olivia De Havilland, Michael Apted and Cloris Leachman, the two Indian talents also featured.
Fans were devastated after actors Soumitra Chatterjee, Sushant Singh Rajput and Rishi Kapoor passed away in 2020. Oscar Oscars honoured these actors in it’s A Look Back segment.
